Planting palettes
We keep each palette to four plant types on purpose. Planted in drifts rather than one of everything, four species read as a designed garden — and they stay easy to water, prune and replace.
Palette
Built for local conditions. Flowers through most of the year and brings honeyeaters into the yard. The easiest of the three to keep looking good through a Perth summer.
Fine weeping green tussock. Takes full sun or part shade and asks for almost nothing once established.
Anigozanthos
WA’s own. Throws red and orange flower spikes for most of the year and the birds come with them.
Compact grey-green shrub that clips into a soft hedge. Handles heat, wind and poor sand.
Low strappy foliage with a blue tint. Good filler at the front of a bed and stays tidy.
Palette
Silver and grey-green foliage with a relaxed, sun-bleached feel. Copes with wind, limestone and reflected heat, so it suits coastal blocks and open new estates.
Senecio serpens
Powder-blue succulent groundcover. Spreads slowly into a mat and needs almost no water.
Low spreading form with white flowers. Softens edges and hides drip line neatly.
Grey foliage, long purple flower spikes, and the scent when you brush past it.
Architectural rosette that anchors a bed. Soft-tipped, so it’s safe around kids.
Palette
The lush, tropical look — big glossy leaves and deep greens. The most striking of the three, and the one that most depends on a well-set retic to stay that way.
Ophiopogon
Dark green tufted border. Plant it in drifts along paths and bed edges.
Broad lobed leaves in a low mound. Does the tropical work without needing height.
Deep burgundy strap leaves. The colour break that stops an all-green bed reading flat.
Strelitzia reginae
Big paddle leaves and the orange crane flower. Reliable in Perth with decent water.
Why only four
One of everything looks busy and ages badly. Four species planted in groups gives you repetition and rhythm, which is what makes a bed look designed rather than collected. It also means you only have four things to learn to look after — and if one fails, we can replace it without hunting down a variety nobody stocks any more.
